Cassandra Wilson at Rockefeller
Grammy-winning jazz vocalist, Cassandra Wilson, jumpstarts the Hyde Park Jazz Festival with a ticketed concert at Rockefeller Chapel on Friday, September 25. In addition to serving as a spiritual and ceremonial center for the University, Rockefeller presents regular concerts and performing arts events — theater, film, visual arts — under the label ARTS ROCK. Cassandra Wilson opens the new season!
Wilson was the featured vocalist on Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning composition Blood in the Fields. Wilson’s repertoire includes both jazz and blues standards and renditions of pop and rock songs. Her concert will include students from Kenwood Academy, following a series of music and song-writing workshops with them.
Tickets start at $20; for ticket information or purchase go to www.iycaf.org or call 773.567.7215.
The third Hyde Park Jazz Festival goes into high-gear on Saturday morning, bringing together world-class headliners and local emerging artists for 15 hours of FREE non-stop jazz. Two of the Saturday afternoon events will be at Rockefeller:
Diane Delin and her Jazz Octagon with Strings
Diane Delin, jazz violinist, composer, and recording artist has been voted a “Rising Star” by Downbeat Magazine’s Critics’ Poll. She performed for President Clinton at Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Center. Her performance at Rockefeller begins at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 26. Free!
Tammy McCann
Classically-trained jazz vocalist and Chicago native Tammy McCann’s vocals are characterized by power and versatility. Singing in Italian, French, and German as well as in English, McCann performs on stages around the world. Her appearance at Rockefeller is at 4:30 pm on Saturday, September 26. Free!
Jazz Instrumentalists on Sunday Morning
Every Sunday at 11 am, Rockefeller Chapel is the setting for a Communion service with glorious music and a variety of liturgical texts, drawn from the great riches of the Christian tradition throughout the world — all are welcome at the table. On Sunday, September 27, the service will be accompanied by jazz instrumentalists in celebration of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival. Associate Dean Laura Hollinger will be preaching.
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is co-sponsored by the Hyde Park Cultural Alliance and Hyde Park Jazz Society. Cassandra Wilson’s concert is additionally cosponsored by the Ifa Yoruba Contemporary Arts Foundation and Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. For the full Festival schedule, visit hydeparkjazzfestival.org.
