The Ceiling

Hildreth Meiere, a New York artist, created the colorful emblems from over 100,000 pieces of Gustavian tile. The combination of the colorful tile and the vaulted ceiling gives the chapel a joyful ambiance, an escape from the traditional dreariness of gothic cathedrals.

The colorful medallions create a magnificent rendition of St. Francis’ “Canticle of the Sun.” The represent the following fourteen subjects: Bird, Beast, Fish, Reptile, Sun, Moon, Star, Tree, Flower, Man, Earth, Water, and Fire
