500th Convocation of the University of Chicago
Friday October 9 at 10:30 am
This ceremony will not be ticketed. Guests are advised to arrive early as seating is limited. Overflow viewing will be available in Max Palevsky Cinema in Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th Street. There will also be a live-feed to the dining halls and on the 500th Convocation website.
Doors will open at 9:45 am for general seating.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Andrew M. Alper A.B. '80 , M.B.A. '81, will offer remarks, as will the President of the Alumni Board of Governors, and a representative of the student body. The faculty address will be given by Martin E. Marty Ph.D. '56, Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity in the Divinity School and in the Committee on the History of Culture. The President of the University, Robert J. Zimmer, will also give an address.
New works by three noted faculty composers (Marta Ptaszynska, Helen B. & Frank L. Sulzberger Professor of Music and the Humanities; Shulamit Ran, Andrew MacLeish Distinguished Service Professor of Music; and Kotoka Suzuki, Assistant Professor of Music), written for Rockefeller Chapel's organ, choirs, and brass, will receive their world premieres at the 500th Convocation.
